“NEW REFUGE”
New lyrical expressions in oil on canvas.
Tuesdays – Fridays: 1pm-4pm and at theatre events or by appointment: 604-517-5900
Address: 735 Eighth Avenue, New Westminster, BC
Artist Statement:
Nature has always been a place of refuge and inspiration for me and is often where I like to paint, in the mountains, forests and by the ocean. Most recently, however, I have found a new refuge in my colours, placing them with emotion onto the canvas in gestures large and small.
These oils on canvas are a journey that I take with my brush as exploration of what may offer sanctuaries of well-being.  The relationships and transitions that occur through the colour movements transform the white canvas into a landscape I desire to visit and reflect on.
By not specifically painting the landscape as a subject, I endeavour to echo the vibrant spirit that moves within, finding new places of joy and peace.\n\n[/cs_content_seo][/cs_element_layout_column][/cs_element_layout_row][cs_element_layout_row _id=”7″ ][cs_element_layout_column _id=”8″ ][cs_element_line _id=”9″ ][/cs_element_layout_column][/cs_element_layout_row][cs_element_layout_row _id=”10″ ][cs_element_layout_column _id=”11″ ][cs_element_text _id=”12″ ][cs_content_seo]You are invited to see “NEW REFUGE” Solo Exhibition – HOURS: TUESDAY – FRIDAY 1 – 4PM , DURING EVENTS AT MASSEY THEATRE AND BY APPOINTMENT. Using a still life participants will create two paintings: one 37-stroke piece and one 37-minute piece. Discussion and tips on using this method to hone in on a personal style will be included and all level of painters are welcome. This is a two – four hour workshop depending on numbers (8 max).

This two hour workshop focuses on brushwork and using palette knife tools where participants will paint a still life or photograph of their choice in acrylics or oils. Jane will offer painting tips and individual encouragement to each participant.

“OUTDOOR SKETCHING/PAINTING-INSPIRED BY NATURE”
This class in watercolours, acrylic or oil will cover personal expression in designing a landscape as well as tips on sketching, colour mixing, shapes and depth in painting landscapes. This class may be outdoors or looking through a window.

“Expressive painting”
Bring your painting supplies and study with Jane Appleby, who will work with you to encourage your expressive style.  Media may include watercolour, pastels, acrylic and oils (odourless solvents only). Special painting techniques on colour expression and composing a dynamic painting will be discussed as well as how to observe a scene and prepare to paint it. Jane will offer tips and encouragement for all levels of painters. A four hour or full day workshop.

“Elements of Composition”
Find out how different shapes, values and colours impact the composition in painting. Explore black and white structures and balance in painting by making simple compositions on paper. Thick pen, watercolour, cut paper and other means will be be used to explore various compositional elements in painting as well as painting a composition based from photos, life or imagination.  All levels of artists are welcome and and supplies list is available. This is a four hour or full day workshop.

“Purposeful Simplification”
“There is power in each brushstroke which can impact a painting” and limiting certain elements will be the focus in this workshop. When painting “less is more” artists consider the elements of design such as using line, shapes, space, textures, colours and values. One of the simplest ways to depict something is to do a simple line drawings of what you see. When employing colour and other elements, the process becomes complex and options are limitless.
In this two hour class Jane will lead participants in exploring simplification through various exercises in painting using watercolour or acrylic.
Painting instruction (indoor or outdoor) and mentorship is available for all levels.
