“EXPRESSIVE WATERCOLOUR SKETCHING”

Come and enjoy an afternoon inspired by the landscape learning how to express in a creative way first with wedge sharpies and then with watercolours. Jane will guide you through methods she uses in her painting process and how to be open to the creativity that is within.

Suggested supply list available. Please bring your own watercolour set and brushes (flat and round), small water container. Also bring 8.5″ x 11” white paper, support for paper with clip or tape, pencil, pen, and a wedge sharpie.

While starting with simple gestures and brushwork we will discuss the elements of design including line, shapes, space, textures, colours, and values to make quick watercolour expressions on paper as well as other exercises to encourage the creative process.

“MAKING COLOUR SING”

Jane will lead you through exercises in colour mixing and using colour placements, offering insights on how to use vibrant colour. Using a limited palette of mixing primaries you will learn how to soften with neutrals and make colour “sing” in the  highlights and where contrasts occur.  Jane will work in acrylic but participants may work in watercolour, pastels, acrylic or oils.

“37 STROKE  / 37 MINUTE PAINTING”

This is a fun workshop, or demo, which explores possible ways to paint. Jane will demonstrate the technique in acrylic while discussing the benefits of these exercises of painting quickly and purposefully. Various media may be used such as oil or watercolour and the focus is on brush work and composition while limiting time (37 minutes) and simplifying applications of paint (in 37 strokes). All levels of  painter’s can benefit from this class while exploring one’s personal style.

“DANCE WITH YOUR BRUSH – STILL LIFE AND BEYOND”

This class will focus on expressive brushwork and using palette knife tools while discussing elements and principles in paintings. Using and mixing primary colours will be covered. Participants can paint a still life or photograph of their choice in acrylics, watercolours or oils in their own joyful way with Jane’s encouragment.

“OUTDOOR LANDSCAPE- SKETCHING AND PAINTING”

While personal expression is encouraged this class offers tips on how to develop a landscape painting. Preliminary sketching, colour mixing, shapes and depth in landscape painting are covered. An outdoor class but can be inside where nature can be seen through a window.  Some previous painting experience is helpful. Various media are welcome, including oils, acrylic, watercolour, pastels.

“PURPOSEFUL SIMPLIFICATION”

“There is power in each brushstroke which can impact a painting” and limiting certain elements will be the focus in this workshop. When painting “less is more” artists consider the elements of design such as using line, shapes, space, textures, colours and values. One of the simplest ways to depict something is to do a simple line drawings of what you see. When employing colour and other elements, the process becomes complex and options are limitless.

In this two hour class Jane will lead participants in exploring simplification through various exercises in painting using watercolour or acrylic.

“ELEMENTS OF COMPOSITION”

Find out how different shapes, values and colours impact the composition in painting. Explore black and white structures and balance in painting by making simple compositions on paper with various media. Charcoal, Ink, pen, watercolour, cut paper and Conte will be be used to explore various compositional elements in painting as well as painting a composition based from photos, life or imagination.
